The Étoile building is known historically as The Cockerton House. It was constructed in 1883 as a single family dwelling by Alfred William Cockerton, a cashier to the state treasurer. The Cockerton House was built in the Italianate style, which was popular in the architecture of New Orleans at that time. It is unique in its Neo-Grec ornamental carved details, and it was originally topped by a decorative cupola. 

The Cockerton House was primarily a residence until transforming into a commercial space for a furniture store, a spa, a restaurant, and most recently as the set for AMC's Parish
